Copying, moving elements between documents

You can use the Copy, Move Elements between Documents tool to copy or move elements between drawing files.

Important: You cannot undo this operation by clicking Undo. When you select this tool, the program automatically makes backup copies of the drawing file/layout and saves them with the extension .bak (assuming that you have set the appropriate option in the Options on the Desktop environment page). The .bak files and the original drawing files/layouts are stored in the same folder, i.e. the project folder. For more information, see Using .bak files.

To copy or move elements between drawing files

  1. Click Copy, Move Elements between Documents (How).
  2. Make settings in the Across documents dialog box.
  3. Select the elements you want to copy or move.

Note: To copy or move all the elements in the source drawing file, click All in the Input options or click the right mouse button twice (in this case a confirmation prompt is displayed). Custom planes are copied or moved when you select them; default planes are only copied or moved when you select all the elements in the drawing file. See also Behavior of default planes when copying or moving elements between documents.

Note: If the source drawing file includes elements whose layers have the status visible, frozen, the system will issue a prompt as to whether these elements are also to be copied or moved. Elements with layers that are Hidden, frozen, are not copied or moved. See also Behavior of layers when copying or moving elements between documents.
