Assigning elements the same group number

You can use this tool to assign the same group number to entities that you have already created.

An entity group is a group of elements which can be addressed as a whole. Polylines constructed in one step, for example, or symbols are entity groups. A group can be addressed as a whole by clicking one of the elements in the group with the middle and then left mouse button. Alternatively, press and hold down the SHIFT key and then click the element with the left mouse button. Elements can be combined into an entity group even while being created (with the Assign Group Number tool) or later (with the Modify Format Properties tool).

Tip: You can address an entity group as a whole by clicking one of the elements in the group with the middle and then left mouse button. Alternatively, press and hold down the SHIFT key.

Note: Architectural elements (walls, rooms etc.) cannot be combined into entity groups.

To assign entities the same group number using Modify Format Properties

1. Click Modify Format Properties (How).
   

   Activate Modify Format Properties in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Edit

   • Keyboard: SHIFT+CTRL+M

   • Toolbar: Basic Tools Edit flyout
2. If you wish to add elements to the entity group of a specific element, you first need to determine its group number.
   Do the following:
   • Click Use parameters.
   • Click the desired element.

     All parameters of this element are transferred to the Modify Format Properties dialog box. The Group number is displayed in the Format Properties area.

3. Deactivate all check boxes in the Format Properties area, with the exception of Group number.
4. Click OK to confirm.
5. Select the elements to which the same group number is to be assigned.
   

   • To select a single element, click it.
   • To select elements in a region, use the left mouse button to open a selection rectangle around the elements you want to select
   • To include all the elements in the current document, click All in the Input options or press CTRL+A. Please note that this option is not available for all tools.

   When selecting elements, you can use the Filter Assistant to apply a filter based on element types and/or properties. For more information, see Filter Assistant.

   All the selected elements are given the same group number.

Alternative: to assign entities the same group number using the Properties palette

1. Open the Properties palette.
2. Select all the elements you wish to combine into an entity group.

   If the elements belong to different entity groups, *varied* is displayed beside Group number in the Properties palette.

3. Define the new group number in one of the following ways:
   • Enter a new number for Group number.
   • Select the Group number entry, click Match settings and then the element of which you want to use the group number.

     All the selected elements are given the same group number.
