General arrangement and reinforcement drawings without drawing file associations

If a current building model is irrelevant, you can work with copied model data in a drawing file. Using this approach, you both create a version of the general arrangement and reinforcement data and make sure that the building model is not changed inadvertently.
What's more, there is no difference when it comes to structuring and organizing the building model and assembling layouts.

To use the Associative Views module to create the general arrangement views in a separate drawing file without any referenced drawing files, start by copying and converting the model data required for the relevant component to the drawing file of this component.
Use the Copy, Convert Elements Across Drawing Files (How) tool.

The 3D solids converted in this way retain all their attributes; only the surface elements are no longer displayed in plan. The 3D solids behave like architectural components in associative views and sections.

Please note that creating, copying or moving data may result in inadvertent drawing file associations, as associative views and sections can only be created across drawing files.

This approach is described in the appendix of "Associative Views - Steps to Success".
