Adding a Foil to a Smart Symbol

You can add a foil to smart symbols that have already been defined. The modification applies to all the instances of the smart symbol.

Note: You cannot use this approach to modify smart symbols that were created using the Smart Window and Door Symbols tool.

To add a foil to a smart symbol

1. Draw the elements you want to include in the foil.
2. Click Modify Smart Symbol (How).
   

   Activate Modify Display Parameters in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Modify Bonus Tools Smart Symbols

   • Palette: Tools Modify area in the following module(s):

   Smart Symbols

3. Click the instance of the smart symbol to which a foil is to be added.
4. In the Modify Smart Symbol dialog box, click an entry in the Foils area with the right mouse button and, on the shortcut menu, choose Define another foil.

   The Modify Smart Symbol dialog box is grayed out and unavailable.

5. Select the elements to be included in the new foil.
6. Enter the foil’s reference point.
7. Press ESC to finish defining the new foil.

   Now you can enter data in the Modify Smart Symbol dialog box again.
   The new foil is added to the end of the entries in the Foils area; however, you can drag and drop it as you need.

8. Define the display parameters of the new foil.
9. Click + to expand the nodes of the other foils and check whether the parameters of the existing foils and those of the new foil match.

   Note: In most cases, you need to adjust the scale range of the existing foils to that of the new foil using the From scale and To scale entries.

10. If you want to save the modified smart symbol, enable the Save in option and enter a name for the smart symbol and specify the folder where it is to be saved.
    If you do not change the name, the original smart symbol will be overwritten.
11. Click OK to apply your settings.

    Note: All the instances of the smart symbol in the active drawing file are replaced by the smart symbol saved in the catalog.
