Union

Module(s): 3D Modeling

You can use the Union tool to join several solids or 3D surfaces to make a single 3D element. You can also create a volume solid from 3D surfaces (e.g. a box based on six 3D surfaces).

Note: The solid (or 3D surface) you select first defines the properties and attributes of the joined solid (or surface).

To join two or more solids

  1. Click Union (How).
  2. Select the first solid. This solid defines the properties and attributes of the joined solid.
  3. Select one or more solids to be joined.
  4. Confirm your selection.

New edges are created at the points of intersection and the new polyhedron can now be addressed as a single 3D entity.

    (A) 2 solids
    (1) Select the first solid
    (2) Select more solids
    (B) 1 solid

Tip: A solid (or surface or ‘open solid’) can be joined with itself (‘normalized’). This cleans up any inconsistencies in the solid.
