Creating new layers and layer hierarchies

Modifying layer structures

You can use this tool to create new layers and layer hierarchies as well as rename existing layers.

• When you are working with Workgroup Manager in a network environment, you must be logged in as administrator.
  

  Workgroup Manager handles the organization of CAD workstations in local networks. The Workgroup Manager module enables users to access all projects on all computers from every workstation. It ensures data consistency even if several users are simultaneously working on the same project.

To create a new layer or layer hierarchy

1. Click Select, Set Layers (How).
   

   Activate Select, Set Layers in one of the following ways

   • Menu bar: Format

   • Keyboard: Ctrl+4

   • Toolbar: Format
2. Select the Select Layer/Visibility tab.
3. In List box contents, select the List entire layer hierarchy option.
4. Using the right mouse button, click where you want to insert a new layer, and, on the shortcut menu, select New.... Please note that the layer is always inserted under the position clicked.

   Depending on which level you select, existing names are used.

5. Enter or change the names for the first level, the second level and the layer itself and define the status in the privilege sets and print sets. Please also read the Notes on layer names.
   

   There are some particular issues to bear in mind when naming layers:

   • You can use any character.
   • You can enter up to 255 characters for the individual hierarchic levels and the full layer names; short layer names can be up to 16 characters long.
   • Check that the names for the first hierarchic level and the short layer names are unique. This applies to short layer names even if they are used in different hierarchic levels.
   • Names for the second hierarchic level and full layer names may occur several times (provided they belong to different, superordinate hierarchic levels).
   • In the case of predefined layers (those provided by Nemetschek), you can only change the short layer name.
   • In the case of user-defined layers, only the information you entered yourself can be modified.
   • You can use numbers 32,767 and higher for user-defined layers; the numbers between 0 and 32,766 are reserved for Allplan layers.
